Why the CDC is Recommending Everyone Wear Cloth Face Masks

Before you think that wearing a face mask in public is over-the-top, think about this:

In the 24-hour period ending at 8 p.m. Eastern time Thursday, April 16, 2020, a record 4,591 people were reported to have died from COVID-19.

Clearly, the beast has not slowed down.

America needs to get back to work. You need to get back to work. The sooner we can demonstrate that we’ve permanently flattened the curve, the sooner this can happen.

Whether you’re an employer of essential or non-essential workers, you want to make sure that your employees are protected, and that the people they serve are protected, as well.

On April 3rd, a CDC recommendation was released that everyone wear a cloth mask when going out in public. If your workers or the customers with which they come in contact are not yet wearing masks, you need to make that happen ASAP.

The CDC recommendation states that cloth masks be used in any public setting where social distancing is difficult to implement, such as gas stations, pharmacies, or grocery stores. Even with a cloth face mask, it’s important to note that social distancing must be implemented whenever possible.

The recommendation to wear cloth masks is a result of research showing that a significant portion of people with COVID-19 do not show symptoms, and even those who have not yet developed symptoms can be contagious up to two weeks before their symptoms begin.

Governor Cuomo of New York just announced that state residents will be required to wear face coverings when they are out and coming in close contact with other people. While these are not surgical grade masks he’s recommending, they are at a minimum, cloth masks designed to slow the spread or reception of the virus.

Regardless of whether or not you are showing symptoms, you may be contagious right now. In order to keep the curve flattened and protect the general public, you must follow the CDC’s recommendation and provide cloth masks or other personal protective equipment for your workers.

A contagious person simply coughing, sneezing, or speaking within close proximity of someone can release microscopic droplets into the air and transmit the virus.

The purpose of a cloth mask is to cover a person’s mouth and nose and prevent these droplets from being released into the air. Wearing a cloth face mask also provides a way to filter the air you breathe and prevent you from touching your face and eyes should your hands become temporarily contaminated.

While N-95 respirators and surgical masks are being reserved for healthcare workers and first responders, cloth masks are recommended for use by the general public. As of now, unless you are in the medical field, cloth masks and face shields are your only means of protection.

There are certain requirements when it comes to making an efficient cloth mask.

An efficient cloth mask will:

  • Fit snugly over your mouth and nose
  • Consist of at least 2 layers of cloth (2-ply)
  • Allow for proper breathing
  • Can be easily hand or machine-washed for reuse

We recommend each employee have at least five cloth face masks, so that they have one for every work day of the week and can wash them over the weekend.

The demand for cloth masks and other PPE has become increasingly high since the CDC released their recommendation, resulting in worldwide shortages and price gouging. Most manufacturers are unable to source enough fabric to keep up with demand and even fewer have the capacity to produce more than 1,000 per day. That means substantial orders are going to take months and months to fulfill.

Fortunately, we saw this crisis coming months ago, and we negotiated amazing terms with one of the largest manufacturers in the world.

We’ve been able to lock down capacity, manpower, fabric, and elastic necessary to produce up to 60,000 cloth face masks per day–even with the worldwide shortage of material.

We have been able to secure enough material to assure wholesale pricing for our customers. And rather than making you wait 2 – 3 months for your masks, we can ship your order to you in 2 – 3 weeks for blank masks and 3 – 4 weeks for logo imprints.

At Quality Face Wear, our masks are machine-washable, reusable, and comfortable; fitting snugly over your mouth and nose and allowing you to breathe comfortably with 4-ply protection.

It’s critical that your employees and customers are all wearing cloth face masks in order to protect themselves and everyone around them.

Don’t wait any longer. As long as we keep the curve flattened, things can go back to normal quicker.

If you need quantities larger than you see on our website, give us a call, and we’ll do everything in our power to get you hooked up so you can avoid the long wait times and the price gougers.
