4 Ways Safety Managers Can Affordably Fund Masks for Their University

There are only a couple of months left until the fall semester starts, and you’ve just been given the essential task of ordering masks for all of your students.

Unfortunately, buying bulk masks for schools is no simple job, and is likely something you’ve never been tasked with before. It can be hard to find quality masks on a limited budget.

Poorly-shaped or constructed masks will slide off the faces of your employees and students while they talk, defeating the purpose altogether and potentially putting students and staff at risk.

Additionally, some masks are made of cheap or inappropriate materials making it difficult to breathe. In order to afford quality, breathable masks that will help everyone feel safe, you may need to raise extra funds.

Asking college students to wash the same reusable mask everyday is a near impossible task, and could potentially leave them without a mask or with a filthy one. The last thing you want is your students walking around with dirty masks diminishing the quality of air they breathe.

With this in mind, we recommend at least 5 masks per student–one for each day of the school week.

But how do you fund 5 reusable masks per student on a limited budget?

Here are a few options you can look into that can help make this crucial purchase more affordable.

Where to get funding for masks

In these times of economic uncertainty and financial stress, it can be incredibly difficult to come up with the cash to buy masks for your students and staff–especially if you didn’t receive a PPP loan. It’s even tougher to ask students to come up with the cash when many are already stressing over their own mounting student loans. Here are a few options that will help you ease the financial burden on all involved.

Depending upon your county or parish, you may be eligible for a grant to purchase PPE for your staff. For example, the Montgomery County Council in Maryland introduced legislation to provide $350,000 worth of grants to local businesses and residents specifically for PPE.

Burke County Public Schools in North Carolina also received $6,000 worth of grants to help purchase masks for their district. Unfortunately, grants can often take an incredibly long time to be approved. Utilizing your university foundation may be a much quicker option.

University foundations

Reaching out to your university foundation to ask for donations is a great way to generate funding for masks. Contact your alumni association and ask if they have any extra funds set aside that could be put towards student safety. Chances are, they do.

Don’t be afraid to think outside of the box and plan some good old-fashioned fundraising. Whether it’s a call campaign to alumni or a raffle, there are lots of creative ways you can generate extra funds.

Fundraisers can be a university-wide event or even be hosted by individual organizations on campus. Organizations like sororities, fraternities, or student government have very large followings and can generate funds quickly through their connections.

Corporate sponsorships

Corporate sponsorships are a great way to receive large donations and, in some cases, result in your entire purchase being taken care of. Consider reaching out to your alumni foundation for corporate sponsor suggestions–they may be able to pull some strings and get one or more corporate sponsors that would be happy to have some goodwill associated with their brand in these uncertain times.

If your alumni foundation is unable to help, popular restaurants near campus are great places to start. Offer to put their logo on your students’ masks in exchange for a negotiated price or contribution. Some sponsors may simply ask for the recognition that they made the donation. This is a great way to not only help fund the masks, but bring the restaurant more business in return.
